Al Wilson was a holdover from the Manning years of Volunteer football and helped be the leader of the 13-0 National Championship team. What made him so special that year, however, was his ability to affect the team from the sidelines. He was hurt much of the year, and often had to sub out of games. Even so, he totaled 272 tackles, and forced three fumbles in finally getting a win over the Florida Gators. After earning an All-SEC honor in 1997, he was a consensus First Team All-American as a Senior. His Vols teams never finished the year outside the national Top 10 polls.
