Bob Suffridge, College Football Hall of Fame Class of 1961

Playing at guard, Suffridge was a pivotal contributor for the 1938 team, his first year eligible for the varsity squad. It was that year, alongside many of his classmates, Coach Neyland was finally able to collect a regular season slate without a loss or tie. Suffridge and his teammate at the other guard position, Ed Molinski, were the heartbeat of the UT squad. Their ability to excel on the line allowed for plays to develop in the run and pass. On defense, Suffridge separated himself with his quickness off the snap. His official College Football Hall of Fame bio credits him with blocking the same extra point attempt three times. The first and second time he blocked it, he was called for being offsides, though it is written many observers believed he was falsely penalized. The third PAT he blocked unflagged, finally being credited with something he had already accomplished twice. Suffridge earned First Team All-American status each of his three years starting on the team.
